Case Background
Mr. D, who worked as a factory operative, sustained an injury to the medial collateral ligament of his knee whilst playing football.
Mr. D was unable to return to work due to ongoing pain and reduced levels of function. Medicess was notified by the employer upon receipt of a medical certificate completed by the patients GP.
Medicess Involvement
Overview:
- Medicess obtained a breakdown of the job specification, hours and duties.
- All of the information was reviewed by the Medicess in-house multi-disciplinary team
- Patient telephone triage
- Rapid referral to a private Physiotherapist alongside GP agreement
- Worksite assessment
It was established that Mr. D had been referred to NHS Physiotherapy; however, significant waiting lists were identified. Medicess implemented Physiotherapy treatment immediately gaining the approval of the treating GP.
Treatment and recovery progressed in line with expected and evidenced timeframes. At the appropriate stage in the recovery process, Medicess implemented a worksite assessment enabling the early return-to-work in line with the current physical function.
The suitable duties programme was coordinated with the Physiotherapy treatment and progressed in line with recovery ending in complete recovery and a full return to work.
Benefits of our involvement
Delayed access to Physiotherapy treatment on the NHS may have led to the injury becoming chronic in nature. Considering this, and if Medicess was not involved in coordinating the early return to work, the cost of absence to the employer would have escalated significantly in excess of any cost obligation for treatment and return-to-work intervention.
